Influence of human uncertainty in the elaboration of fuzzy reference databases for the accuracy assessment of land cover maps

چکیده
Department of Mathematics, University of Coimbra, Portugal Reference databases for the accuracy assessment of land cover maps are assumed to represent the true land cover in a set of selected locations. Although, the elaboration of reference databases through field visits or photo interpretation of aerial images is a hard and difficult task due to uncertainty in the assignment of the most correct land cover class at each sample location because of landscape fragmentation. To capture the diversity of land cover in each pixel of the reference data, a linguistic scale composed by five linguistic values is used in this paper and a methodology to translate the linguistic values to fuzzy intervals is proposed, based on the responses of the photo interpreters to a set of chosen pixels. These fuzzy intervals are then used to build a fuzzy confusion matrix and fuzzy thematic accuracy measures are derived. The main goal of this study is to quantify the differences of perception of photo-interpreters when assigning a linguistic scale to the sample pixels of the reference database. The proposed approach is tested on a case study where the accuracy assessment of a map of Continental Portugal with five land cover classes, derived from MERIS images, is made.

A Fuzzy Synthetic Evaluation Approach for Land Cover Cartography Accuracy Assessment
The accuracy assessment of land cover maps is traditionally based on reference sample observations randomly selected over the study area. It is assumed that reference sample observations, representing the “real” land cover at Earth’s surface, are free of errors. However, some of these may be erroneous. These errors are sometimes due to an uncertainty in the identification of the most adequate r...

Study of land use/cover changes is widely used in environmental planning. During the last decade, growing increase of aridity in Uromiyah Basin has become a major regional and even national problem. The purpose of this study is to reveal the changes in land use/cover in the southern and southeastern parts of the basin with using 2 images for month of July of 2000 to 2017. Landsat TM and OLI dat...

Assessment of land use spatiotemporal changes provide valuable data for managers to elaborate plans. Land use change modeling is one of the methods used by planers to manage land use changes. Detection of such changes may help decision makers and planners to understand the factors in land use and land cover changes in order to take effective and useful measures. Remote sensing (RS) and geograph...

Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...
